Cars 2: Turntable "Finn McMissile"
Is The Cars 2 Movie As Fun As The Original?
In the first Cars movie, we met the automotive personalities who are now household names: Lightning McQueen, Mater the tow truck and Sally the Porsche. Lightning had a life-long desire of winning the Piston Cup Championship Race which was held in California. In his mission to get there, he traveled by means of Route 66 and found journeys during the trip.
The 1st Cars movie was mainly about creating the personalities and drawing us in to the unknown realm of talking autos. We grew to love them as we cheered them on. I will not divulge the ending but it is likely apparent that the movie ends well, but not necessarily the way you’d expect.
The Cars 2 movie continues the theme of camaraderie and dedication as the cars head offshore for the World Grand Prix championship. Mater is faced with the choice of helping his buddy win the race or take a huge detour and help in a top secret quest that rivals those of James Bond.
Once in Britain, Mater is incorrectly recognized for a spy, which sets the friends off on a wild chase. Larry the Cable Guy performs the voice of Mater, pitting the southern bumbling tow truck against the sleek and cultured Michael Caine. Seeing Mater attempt to make his way through England is worth the ticket cost alone.
No animated movie that takes place in England could be as good if it didn't have the voice of Michael Caine who performs the part of Finn McMissile, a british Aston Martin automobile. The storyline contains a fight about fossil fuels and alternative energy for autos.
Because of the discussion of engineering development of cars, Mater tries on a couple of new features for himself. The scene where he discovers “voice activation” his Southern drawl is hilarious as he requests “Mater-hosen” from the German automotive department.
As a Pixar movie, Cars 2 is wonderful to view. The colors are intense, down to the light beams coming from the headlights as the cars rush all around the race track. The film is fast-paced, with laughs sometimes zooming by so quickly it’s tough to keep track of it all.
A few writers have panned this film, saying it’s more show than substance but they fail to consider that this is a kids' movie. Most kids are accompanied by an parent and let’s face it, kid movies have to be accommodating to children and adults alike. It’s a challenging balancing act.
Of course, there are antics in this movie that were a little infantile for my tastes but the kids loved them. On the other hand, there were some plot turns that I’m sure were lost on the younger movie goers, but it brought the parents into the plot.
This was a enjoyable movie to watch, even when the story became somewhat crazy. I generally don’t see movies I review in 3-D as I don’t need to be lured away from a really good plot and cinematography by a digital gimmick. It's an easy task to impress an audience with computer graphics when the story line is lousy. This was not so in Cars 2. This film is really a wonderful English spy movie with cute cars as the characters.
This movie would be fantastic to see in 3-D or regular format. It will keep you involved in the film for the entire 90 minutes, unlike other kids' movies that can be a drag to watch. If you are trying to find a genuine British masterpiece, this isn't it. If you want to have a great time for a few hours with your kids, then grab a box of candy and have yourself a delightful time. Better yet, download movies from the Internet and make your own snacks at home.
