The World Of Classic Cars
If you were a teenager (particularly if you were a guy) or even an older person who was a car admirer in the sixties and seventies, or if you just have enthusiasm for those cars now, you're probably quite familiar with the term classic muscle cars. When it came to putting muscle under the hood, all the American car manufacturers had entries in this category. This yielded models such as the Thunderbird classic cars and many others. Most notably, Ford was known for the Mustang Mach 1, Chevy for the Camaro Z28 and Chrysler Corp. for the Dodge Challenger and the Plymouth ‘Cuda. You can't list American classic American muscle cars unless you include those. But there were plenty of others that also come under the American muscle car category. The Chevy Corvette, for instance, will always be a favorite because of its attractive lines and well-known performance and speed. Also known for its style is Ford's Thunderbird. And for dominance and presence on on back-street race nights, you can't beat the Dodge Super Bee.
To this day, classic muscle car photos fill publications committed to documenting classic cars and satisfying their admirers' need to appreciate them. No matter what happens with the price of oil or the economy, the popularity of these classics will never diminish.
But this automobile category is about much more than classic American muscle cars. There are many compelling automobiles that came out of that era that had more than just power and speed. As an example, the Tucker was unique. As the first production car that was designed to include seat belts (although they never made it to the final version of the car because of the cost), it was way ahead of its time. Safety was vital to Preston Tucker, so the original design of the car also had a safety roll bar and a windshield that popped out in the event of an accident. Although the Tucker was an instant hit as far as the public was concerned, only 51 cars were produced before the company had to close in 1949 because of a securities fraud trial and an Securities and Exchange Commission investigation. The allegations turned out to be baseless, but that was found out too late to save the Tucker.
Another interesting classic car offering was the Chrysler turbine. Using wind to draw air in through a compressor and heating it to form a hot gas directed against turbine wheels, it was one of a kind. Its unique turbine engine ran on kerosene, diesel, unleaded gasoline or JP-4 jet fuel and had one-fifth the number of moving parts as a piston engine. It also looked different, because its ultra-modern design resembled the Batmobile. Sadly, only a small number of the turbine cars were manufactured and most were destroyed when the experiment was through.
The more you look into the history of classic vintage cars, the more interesting stories you will find. But if you're a vintage car lover, you already knew that!
